Types of installation

There are a number of different ways that an ECU installation can be integrated with your car. The best technique will depend on your car as well as the intended usage. The team at STM can advise you on the best option to suit your requirements.

ECU Installation Techniques

Patched Into Existing Loom

Our most common installation involves wiring a new ECU into the existing loom in your car. Here we remove the factory ECU connector plugs, and hard-wire the loom for your new ECU into the factory wiring. This results in a quick and neat installation, which retains the factory wiring in the engine bay.

Plug-N-Play

For a number of the more popular Japanese cars, direct replacement ECU's known as plug-n-play units are available. These replace the factory ECU PC board, and fit inside the factory case. This is a clean and simple approach to fitting a tuneable ECU to your vehicle, saving much of the cost of custom wiring. Expansion looms are still available to add additional functionality to these plug-n-play ECUS such as motorsport functions, wideband lambda control or knock control.

Wire From Scratch Installation

This technique involves wiring the ECU from the header plug through to the individual sensors and actuators on your engine. This technique is suitable for engine swaps, home-built/kit cars, or purpose built race cars. This allows any unnecessary wiring to be trimmed out of the new loom to reduce weight, and if desired the loom can be hidden from view.

ECU Upgrade/Re-pin

In some instances where a car is already running on an aftermarket ECU and the owner wants to upgrade the ECU to gain advantage of a superior ECU design or additional features, we are often able to repin the existing wiring loom to suit the new ECU header plug. This greatly reduces the labour as we don't need to rewire the entire engine. Our ability to use this technique does rely on your existing wiring being in good condition.

Adapter Loom

In some instances we are able to build a custom adapter loom to suit your car. This incorporates a short loom (usually 500mm) with a header connector that matches your original car loom. This allows your new aftermarket ECU to be plugged in just like the factory ECU. No cutting of your original wiring is required, and the car can be returned to stock at any time by plugging the factory ECU back in.
